When the move is long distance, you need to take some time to exercise your pet and make sure they are as comfortable as possible. Your dog or cat is not going to be that happy for all of the traveling in the first place, but things can be ten times worse if you throw them in a kennel or a tote and do not allow them to get some of that energy out. Taking them for a walk and running them around the park, or at least playing with them at home, can make a big difference. 

One of the best ways to calm down any pet when you are moving is to make sure that they get some movement before they have to get put in the kennel. When the animal is worn out and tired, they will sleep at least for some of the trip, which can make it go faster as well. And they have less time and energy to feel stressed out when they are nice and tired. 

You can choose how to wear out the pet, but make sure that they are not napping while you finish loading up the  truck. This is going to make the situation worse because your pet will be full of energy and not too happy about having to sit still in the tote or the kennel. Throw a ball, go on a walk, or do something else to wear out that energy.
