There are two main types of leases that you can choose to work on when you are ready to move into an apartment. Most of the time, the landlord and the tenant are going to focus on a long-term lease to help them get through things and to have some stability. The tenant likes that they can be in the apartment for a year or longer and their rent will stay the same. And the landlord is going to enjoy that they have a long-term tenant who is moving in and making the place their own, without having to market or hope that they can find someone else to move in.

But the long-term lease is just one of the options that you can choose when it is time to move into a new apartment. You may also want to consider whether a short-term lease, also known as a month to month lease, is going to work well for your needs. With these, you will not have the same stability that you can enjoy from the other type, but you do have more flexibility. This can be nice for someone who is new to town, who may only be in the area for a few months, or someone who doesn’t want to be tied down to a longer lease.

These month to month leases are going to be more flexible compared to the long-term leases. They allow the tenant to rent until they are ready to leave. This can be for a few months or for a few years, but there is more freedom because you are not locked into the lease for too long at the time. At most, the tenant, if they move out, is only going to be held liable for one month of rent and then you can move. Keep in mind that these provide less stability and most of the time, the landlord will make the rent higher as well. Be prepared for the landlord to end the contract too if they wish, because you don’t have that protection either.
