Company Profile
The Akshaya Patra Foundation (TAPF), an initiative of ISKCON Bangalore, from its humble beginnings in the year 2000 serving 1500 children in five schools in Bangalore has developed rapidly into the largest non-governmental mid-day meal program in the world. TAPF currently feeds approx 1 million underprivileged children per day in 16 locations across India.
With Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in nominal terms has crossed USD one trillion in 2006, India is now the world’s tenth largest economy. Even with 108 million children attending primary school in India, making the country’s education system the second largest in the world after China,we still have about 45 million (13.5 million between the age group of 6 and 13) children out of school because they are hungry and have to fend for themselves doing menial jobs and hence stay away from attending schools.
Unless invested in, these children would grow into illiterate adults. With India on the threshold of development and socio-economic prosperity, it is imperative for these children to be incorporated into the mainstream society, with all its myriad opportunities for good education, better career and good health.
These are India’s current challenges—how to provide the poor equitable access to food, education, jobs and healthcare and harness the wealth of human potential?
To address this very real and present problem, a secular, charitable organization, Akshaya Patra was started. Akshaya Patra (meaning abundant, inexhaustible in Sanskrit) offers unlimited, nutrition-rich food everyday to school children in over 6500 government schools in sixteen locations in India. Since its inception, the program has scaled up to provide over a million hygienic and nutritious meals every day through an extremely cost-effective process.
In addition to improving children’s health and nutrition, Akshaya Patra produces dramatic results on school enrolment, attendance and academic performance. India’s rapidly growing economy stands to benefit greatly from Akshaya Patra’s program as unprecedented employment opportunities become available to educated, healthy young people. Akshaya Patra serves as a model of sustainable programming due to its unique system of mechanized kitchens, effective school meal delivery network, and emphasis on public-private partnerships. As a result of its extensive partnerships and programmatic successes, Akshaya Patra has become highly trusted, and has utilized its credibility to scale up operations to feed a constantly increasing number of children. Akshaya Patra is headquartered in Bangalore, operates in seven Indian states..
Akshaya Patra is distinguished from other midday meal programs due to the flexibility and creativity with which the program has been conceived and executed. The entire meal production and delivery system is intelligently designed and engineered to maximize operational and cost efficiency, while adhering to international standards of hygiene and quality. Where the environment is conducive (i.e., in mid-size and large cities), the program has incorporated a centralized approach with kitchens serving multiple schools. Akshaya Patra also has a decentralized approach catering to the needs of communities in hard-to-reach rural areas with limited infrastructure and schools separated by large distances. The centralized kitchens are the hallmark of the Akshaya Patra program. These fully automated kitchens can prepare 185,000 meals in less than five hours. The kitchens use gravity flow mechanisms to minimize human handling of food and ensure high standards of hygiene and cleanliness. Appropriate technological considerations have governed all phases of the design and meal preparation process, including: construction of large stainless steel cauldrons with easy tilt mechanisms that can prepare 1,200 liters of lentils in two hours, mechanized high speed cutting of vegetables, and conveyor belts for easy transportation. Steam as a source of cooking accelerates the cooking process, retains nutrients, and is cost effective and clean. A chapatti making machine used by Akshaya Patra in the north can prepare 10,000 chapattis in an hour. Akshaya Patra’s kitchens meet ISO guidelines and six of the kitchens are ISO 22000 certified. Meals are even adapted to regional food preferences so that they are not only nutritious, but also tasty for the children.
Akshaya Patra’s meal delivery system involves innovative logistics using custom designed vehicles to transport food from the kitchens to schools according to a strict schedule with optimal storage and minimal spillage. In kitchens, the food is packed into stainless steel containers and loaded into the trucks. Using a coordinated fleet of vehicles, food is transported to schools within a 50km radius. The vehicles drop off the meals at schools (about 20 to 25 schools per vehicle) and pick up the empty containers on their return trip to the kitchens. The decentralized program model was introduced for rural areas where transportation costs are high due to road conditions and the large distance separating villages from one another. In the decentralized model, small kitchens are built next to the schools and local women are employed and trained to prepare the meals for nutritional content.
Akshaya Patra has developed a highly replicable model that brings together the public and private sectors to implement its program in an efficient and cost-effective manner. The Indian government provides subsidized grain, land, water and tax breaks. The private sector brings in resources, capabilities, creativity, energy and investments. Other NGOs have contributed by installing an innovative rainwater harvesting system and piloting programs to add micronutrients and de-worming tablets. This is a model that has full participation from teachers, parents, and the local economy – thus creating a community dedicated to simultaneously eradicating hunger and promoting education. Food stocks for kitchens are sourced from local farmers, thereby supporting the local economy and insulating the program from external price shocks. The Akshaya Patra kitchens are also source of employment. This collaboration has directly resulted in Akshaya Patra’s success, making it a highly trusted organization that effectively brings about change.
AkshayaPatra is poised for ambitious growth. It is our aim to feed 5 Million children every day by the year 2020 .
